Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours. Add those up. Divide by total credit hours. That quotient is your GPA.
Unweighted: all courses on a 4.0 max. Weighted: advanced courses (AP, IB, Honors) get bonus points, allowing GPAs above 4.0.
Most US schools use 4.0. Some award 4.3 for A+. The 5.0 scale applies when weighted GPAs include course-level bumps. Use whatever your school reports.

For preliminary applications and scholarship forms, yes. For final admissions, colleges typically verify with your official transcript directly from your school.
