The math behind it.

Cumulative GPA formula: (Previous quality points + New quality points) / (Previous credits + New credits). If your previous GPA is 3.5 with 60 credits, that is 210 quality points. Adding 15 new credits with a 3.8 semester GPA (57 quality points) gives: (210 + 57) / (60 + 15) = 267 / 75 = 3.56

It depends on your institution. Some include transfer grades, others only count the credits without the grades. Check with your registrar.

They count the same as regular semester courses. The grades and credits are added to your running totals.

The more credits you have accumulated, the less impact any single semester has. A bad freshman semester is diluted by three more years of courses.

Some schools allow students to reset their GPA after a significant break. Old courses remain on the transcript but no longer count toward the cumulative GPA.
